I never thought of myself as someone who needed a leader. When people talk about radical leaders and their ability to change whole societies, I always find myself thinking “but how does one person get so much control?”.
Well. Now I know. I hardly followed the two million articles and news stories and hype about Barak during the presidential election. In truth, he was black, and Oprah supported him, and that was enough for me to want to vote him in.
In truth the only President that would be better for America beside a semi black President would be a totally black President or a Mexican…since they make up 50% of the population and work force of America anyway.When he won the Presidential election I was so relieved, having had a terrible nightmare two weeks before the vote where he didn’t win (no shit, the US Presidential election actually woke me from my sleep in a deep sweat).
Anywho. I am a firm believer that this world has some issues. I also have a love/hate relationship with the US. In 2007 I got a job in New York, but didn’t get my Visa to work for longer than four months so I had to let the job go. It took 4 months of paperwork for the Visa request, criminal checks, background checks etc. In those 4 months of preparation I was in the states all the time, and for a year and a half before that I was on in the US all the time or at least always on the phone with an American.

American’s are strange creatures.
Let’s say that the middle of the road working American’s that I encountered in my vacations and work were people that are actually different than any other population in the world. The woman have manicured hands. They really follow brands and musical theatre and tv and their own citizens achievements. They have very little information in their public “educational” centres. I can't tell you how many Huge American Site Seeing Aquariams, I’ve been to. Where the only thing written on the species exhibited was in the giftstore on a t-shirt.
Americans are incredibly good at Exaggerating as well.
Food portions, prices - or too high or too low, quantity of possessions, scale of everything….house, # of cars, scale of malls or grocery stores or Walmarts, use of everything, opinions, interests….they are a people, that in my opinion, do few things “middle of the road”.
Their economy is run my teenagers who know nothing about anything, people who speak um….really um….slowly with um…..lot’s of like…..um….. like…..pauses. Is that right?.....................…..like ………………um…………...pauses……. ????
and yet they seem to communicate just fine.
And then there is Hip Hop culture. That like it or not is every ethnoologists (no idea if this exists) dream. Language, clothing, music. Hip Hop is sung in every language in the world and in my opinion is one of the most important sub cultures of America, ruling huge portions of the economy and lifestyle. I have a feeling that in a few hundred years time people will talk about the age of hip hop the way they talk about the age of Industrialism. Much more than music and much more than clothing.
Let’s talk for a moment about communication. I had to come to terms with something big when I first moved to Italy, and that was their complete obsession for America.
Italy has remakes of almost every single American reality or Contest passed TV show in America…..ok or in fact they have remakes to every American show from 3 years ago, because they are a little slow on catching up to American trends, and mindsets, then organizing themselves and siphoning enough money away from dirty projects to start their own remakes
Every American film in the theatre in English with subtitles or in Italian overdubbed. AND YES Italians LOVE the Godfather series, Al Pacino rules here (his voice is hilarious in Italian).
AMERICANS are the inventors of modern communication.
At first I couldn’t understand why every time I turned on the radio here there was an English song, the tv has English shows, the news is filled with news from America, Magazines are reprints in Italian of American magazines….. And then I realized that America, despite its numerous faults is the inventor of all forms of modern communication. Ruling every channel we have to commuicate with one another.
I only have to examine facebook to understand this right away. That in the 4 months every Italian with a computer under 35 talks about getting “taggato” or “pocatto”.
I can’t deny that America rules the world because they rule communication. Filtering their messages of consumption and modernity to every part of the planet that has the ability to receive it.
Back to Barak.
I never thought I was a person who needed a leader. And then I found myself waiting all month for Barak to be sworn in. He for me represents security and stability and intelligence. He is not a millionaire. He is not reactionary. He is visionary.
I know none of this for a fact.
But I just read his speech and I have to admit I feel better about the whole thing.I give him the next few years, and the few after that, and maybe even the few after that.In my opinion it takes more than one term of office to change the World.
All great things took there time. The problem is that we live in an age of quick results and short planning cycles. I can think of few projects in the last 100 years that took 100 years to complete. However, if we look at ancient societies we find that the things that stand thousands of years after they were started, are the same things that took hundreds of years to complete.
Dear Barak,You are the new leader of the Universe and I have faith in you because you play basketball, and you go to church, and your speech said things that everyone thinks and no one says. Dear Barak I have no expectations of you what so ever to change the Universe in the next few years. And If I could vote for you, I would vote you in for life so you wouldn’t have to worry about Presidential campaigns and you could get on with the more important task of making every single life on the planet better.I find myself for the first time with a leader, and this is a strange feeling.
I find myself wanting to do more and be a better person because Barak Obama is President.
And I would like to um……thank ……..like ….ummmm.........the Americans? Ya. THE AMERICANS Y'ALL....GIVE IT UP FOR THE AH- MARE- EEE- CANS Y'ALL........., for making this man the new ruler of the world.
